The 1st gold medal of the Chengdu 31st FISU World University Games and the Chinese University Sports Delegation of Chengdu FISU Games, as well as the 1st gold medal of the athletes of Chengdu Sport University, was won by Cao Maoyuan!

On July 29, the first gold medal was awarded at the 31st FISU World University Games. Cao Maoyuan, a member of the Chinese University Sports delegation and an Athlete-student majoring in Wushu and Ethnic Traditional Sports from the School of Wushu of Chengdu Sport University, won the first gold medal at the Chengdu 2021 FISU World University Games with victory of 9.770 points in the Men's Nanquan of Wushu taolu (routines competition).

Cao Maoyuan has won many medals in large domestic events. In the Nanquan competition of the Wushu event of the Chengdu Games, Cao Maoyuan also lived up to the expectations, conquering the judges with a set of strong and vigorous nanquan movements and winning the gold medal for the Chinese university sports delegation!

Cao, a student from Chengdu Sport University, was called up to the Sichuan provincial Wushu Team in 2008. Later in 2015, he became a professional athlete of the Sichuan provincial Wushu Team.

In 2016, Cao Maoyuan was enrolled in the Chengdu Sport University where he received training with the assistance of his coach, Liu Jinli, an associate professor at the School of Wushu of Chengdu Sport University. "When I first met him, he was still relatively young, and at that time, he wasn't mature regarding his mentality. After starting to train with me for a period of time, I found that he has a kind of inspirational spirit, and for the martial arts program, he is devoted and persistent. His passion and confidence for Wushu have not been erased for so many years," Liu Jinli recalled.

Liu Jinli introduced that to participate in the Chengdu Games, Cao Maoyuan also gave up a lot. "Wushu Routine Competition is now facing the introduction of new rules, so some domestic competitions are experimental-oriented under the new rules. China's Wushu athletes are aiming at the specific direction of the competition under the new rules, the specific requirements. And the competition of the Chengdu Games is exactly at this time, Cao Maoyuan already decided to participate in Chengdu Games and gave up those competitions, which can let him adapt to the new rules as soon as possible. So giving up those tournaments may impact the subsequent development of a Wushu athlete. But he insisted on competing in his homeland."

It is Cao Maoyuan's hardworking and unswerving zeal that has enabled him to achieve what he has today.
